  • Extracranial internal carotid artery aneurysm: a rare cause of stroke by M Troxler and D Berridge. This case report describes eloquently a rare finding of a carotid artery aneurysm leading to stroke. Stroke remains very much at the forefront of government health initiatives, and this concise study brings our attention to a most unusual cause. It provides useful background information, quality images, and describes patient management from diagnosis to discharge. This paper has educational value for all those involved in head and neck imaging services.
  • A theoretical and experimental study of the double aorta artefact in B-mode imaging by V Bull and K Martin. This original research describes the physics behind the ‘double aorta’ phenomenon which may be seen during abdominal scanning. In this fascinating report, the authors recreate conditions required to generate this artefact and add weight to the belief that it is caused by refraction of the energy beam. Their paper is a timely reminder to all practitioners that a thorough understanding of ultrasound propagation through material is essential if artefacts are to be recognized and minimized in clinical practice.
